The cell first enters a period of intense metabolic activity, absorbing nutrients and synthesizing proteins, enzymes, and genetic material in preparation for reproduction.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"583\" data-end=\"899\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once sufficient growth occurs, the bacterium reproduces through <strong data-start=\"647\" data-end=\"665\">binary fission<\/strong>. During this process, the DNA is copied and the cell divides into two genetically similar daughter cells. Under ideal conditions, some bacteria can repeat this cycle extremely rapidly, sometimes doubling in population within minutes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"1209\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">As microbial populations increase, nutrients gradually become limited and waste products accumulate. Growth slows, competition intensifies, and microbes begin activating stress-response systems. Some species form biofilms or cooperative microbial communities that improve survival under difficult conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1211\" data-end=\"1396\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">When environmental stress becomes severe, certain microbes enter dormant survival stages. Many bacteria produce highly resistant <strong data-start=\"1340\" data-end=\"1354\">endospores<\/strong>, dormant structures capable of surviving:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1397\" data-end=\"1475\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li data-section-id=\"9h71ra\" data-start=\"1397\" data-end=\"1411\">extreme heat<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"18ir1v7\" data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1425\">dehydration<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1wxbsvf\" data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1437\">radiation<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"14eee58\" data-start=\"1438\" data-end=\"1455\">chemical stress<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1mzotyf\" data-start=\"1456\" data-end=\"1475\">nutrient scarcity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1591\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">These spores can remain inactive for years or even centuries before becoming active again when conditions improve.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1835\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fungi and protozoa often have more complex life cycles involving multiple developmental forms, spore production, and both sexual and asexual reproduction. Some protozoa alternate between active feeding stages and highly resistant cyst stages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"2110\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Viruses follow an entirely different cycle. They cannot reproduce independently and must first infect a host cell. Once inside, viral genetic material hijacks the host\u2019s cellular machinery to produce new viral particles, which are later released to infect additional cells.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2356\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">In natural ecosystems, microbial life cycles are continuous and highly responsive to environmental change.
