In doing so, they generate the chemical energy needed for growth while releasing oxygen as a byproduct.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diatoms are especially remarkable because their cells are enclosed within intricate silica-based walls called <strong>frustules<\/strong>, which function almost like microscopic glass shells. These structures help regulate light capture, protection, buoyancy, and nutrient exchange in aquatic environments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Their photosynthesis depends on several key components:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\n<p>chlorophyll and accessory pigments that absorb sunlight<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>dissolved carbon dioxide from water<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, and silica<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>specialized internal membranes where light-driven reactions occur<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Iron is particularly important in many ocean regions because it supports enzymes involved in photosynthetic electron transport. Nearly the entire cell can participate directly in photosynthesis and nutrient absorption.
