Modern agriculture relies on several microbial processes that help improve crop productivity while reducing dependence on chemical inputs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most significant discoveries was biological nitrogen fixation. Bacteria such as <\/span><b><i>Rhizobium<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form partnerships with legumes and convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms plants can use. Similar nitrogen-fixing microbes, including <\/span><b><i>Azotobacter<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><i>Azospirillum<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are widely used as biofertilizers to improve soil fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another major breakthrough was the discovery of mycorrhizal fungi. These fungi form networks around plant roots, increasing the uptake of water, phosphorus, and other nutrients.
