In nature, they form complex communities where different species exchange nutrients, remove waste products, and perform complementary functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The human gut is a good example. <\/span><b><i>Bacteroides<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> break down complex carbohydrates, <\/span><b><i>Faecalibacterium prausnitzii<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produces beneficial short-chain fatty acids, and <\/span><b><i>Methanobrevibacter smithii<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removes hydrogen generated during fermentation. Together, they accomplish far more than any one species could alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar cooperation occurs in soils. <\/span><b><i>Rhizobium<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supplies nitrogen to plants, <\/span><b><i>Streptomyces<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decomposes organic matter, and mycorrhizal fungi help roots absorb nutrients and water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large microbial communities also drive planetary processes. Ocean microbes such as <\/span><b><i>Prochlorococcus<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cyanobacteria, and countless other species collectively influence oxygen production, carbon cycling, and nutrient recycling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists increasingly use microbial consortia in biotechnology because different microbes can be assigned different jobs. Communities often produce chemicals, treat waste, or generate biofuels more efficiently than individual species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A single microbe performs a limited set of functions.
