Every day, billions of microbes are deliberately cultivated to remove pollutants from industrial wastewater before the water is released back into the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most widely used approach is called the <\/span><b>activated sludge process<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Treatment tanks are inoculated with microbial communities containing bacteria, fungi, and protozoa that thrive on the waste present in the water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As air is pumped into the tanks, the microbes begin feeding on dissolved organic pollutants. They grow, multiply, and gather into microscopic clusters called <\/span><b>flocs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These flocs act like tiny biological cleanup crews, capturing and consuming contaminants as wastewater flows through the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first job is usually performed by <\/span><b>heterotrophic bacteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pseudomonas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacillus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acinetobacter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These microbes break down organic wastes, oils, and other carbon-rich pollutants, converting them into microbial biomass, carbon dioxide, and water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wastewater often contains ammonia, which can be toxic to aquatic life. <\/span><b>Nitrifying bacteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrosomonas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrobacter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> solve this problem by converting ammonia into nitrate through a process known as nitrification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the process does not stop there. <\/span><b>Denitrifying bacteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including species of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paracoccus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pseudomonas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, convert nitrate into nitrogen gas, which escapes harmlessly into the atmosphere. This prevents excess nitrogen from accumulating in rivers, lakes, and coastal waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many treatment systems also encourage the growth of <\/span><b>phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidatus Accumulibacter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These microbes absorb and store large amounts of phosphorus, helping remove another major pollutant from wastewater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without these microbial processes, nutrient-rich wastewater could trigger algal blooms, oxygen depletion, fish deaths, and ecosystem damage.
