Without microbes, cities would quickly become overwhelmed by sewage, unpleasant odors, and disease-causing waste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sewage is rich in organic matter from human waste, food residues, paper products, and household wastewater. When it reaches a treatment plant, microbes begin <\/span><b>breaking down this material almost immediately<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacteria such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacillus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pseudomonas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acinetobacter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consume much of the organic waste as a food source. As they grow, they reduce pollution and transform sewage into <\/span><b>simpler, less harmful substances<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest challenges is dealing with <\/span><b>sewage sludge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the solid material that remains after treatment. Here, anaerobic microbes take over. In oxygen-free digesters, organisms such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methanobacterium<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methanosaeta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> break down complex organic matter and produce <\/span><b>methane-rich biogas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process dramatically reduces the volume of sludge while generating <\/span><b>renewable energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can help power the treatment facility itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microbes also help <\/span><b>reduce pathogen levels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during sewage treatment. Diverse microbial communities in activated sludge systems contribute to the removal of organisms such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escherichia coli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salmonella<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other fecal bacteria before final disinfection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combined with chlorination, ultraviolet treatment, or similar processes, this microbial activity improves the <\/span><b>safety of treated water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern sewage remediation is therefore much more than waste disposal.
