While many bacteria are spherical, rod-shaped, or spiral, others possess highly unusual geometries adapted to specific environments and survival strategies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some microbes form:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>\n<p>star-shaped cells<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>square or rectangular structures<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>filament-like networks<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>branching forms<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>stalked appendages<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>corkscrew spirals<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For example, the archaeon <strong>Haloquadratum walsbyi<\/strong> has an almost perfectly square shape and thrives in extremely salty environments. Certain cyanobacteria form long chains of connected cells, while spiral-shaped bacteria such as <strong>spirochetes<\/strong> use their twisted structure for movement through viscous environments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Diatoms are among the most structurally remarkable microbes. Their cell walls are made of silica and form intricate microscopic patterns that resemble glass sculptures.
